FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The winners are …AWOB Announces Winners of 2014 Crystal Star Awards
The Stars shone brightly at the Crystal Star Gala Awards Dinner and Ceremony recently, as three outstanding women business owners were recognized as the top performers in their categories in the South Puget Sound region. Sponsored by the Alliance of Women-Owned Business and selected by a panel of independent judges, the Crystal Star, Rising Star and Shining Star Awards are presented by AWOB biannually to women who inspire, open doors and make a difference today and tomorrow. Crystal Star Award, acknowledging the outstanding role a woman has played over the years in enhancing the status of all women business owners through her creative vision, determination, success, and leadership in her business and community:
Ms. Laura Day-Moran, Harbor Audiology & Hearing Services Inc.
Laura purchased her first practice in Gig Harbor in the late 90’s and followed with a second office in Tacoma in 2007. She has built a thriving and sustainable practice and strives, with careful planning and tenacious goals, to continue building on her business success. Laura credits her enthusiastic staff for their shared commitment to caring for the patients and sees them as integral to her success.
The judges felt Laura’s edge is her attention to best practices and robust professional development (weekly training!) for her entire staff. She also distinguishes herself through public service that includes international medical missions, free hearing assessments to needy community members, and award-winning volunteerism through Gig Harbor Midday Rotary. Laura’s super-savvy budgeting and financial tracking also impressed the panel.
Laura is a long time member of Midday Rotary and has travelled many times to Guatemala to help test, fit hearing aids, and work with children in need
Rising Star Award, honoring a woman entrepreneur, who has owned her business for less than five years, and is already showing the persistence, tenacity and leadership to make a difference in her business and community:
Winner of the Rising Star Award 2014:
Ms. Sarah Friesen, Gig Harbor Home Management Inc.
Sarah began her business in 2011 with a vision to provide high quality customized home watch services for snowbirds, vacation rentals and vacant homes. Making swift business progress and with big bodacious goals, by 2013 Sarah was hiring employees.
Sarah often introduces her services as the umbrella over a home. It covers all aspects of operating a household. She is a true reflection of sustainable growth, committed to supporting her well-qualified employees, compelled to succeed as she cares about her clients, and inspiring herself and her children as she sees her business providing the financial foundation for her family’s future.
The judges were impressed with Sarah’s ability to articulate her businesses, having many divisions under that umbrella. She provided detailed notebooks illustrating her ideas, advertising campaigns and public outreach for emergency preparedness. She left us interested in hearing more of her plans.
Shining Star Award, recognizing a current AWOB Alliance member and business woman who contributes to the mission and vision of AWOB as well as shining her own entrepreneurial light:
Winner of the Shining Star Award 2014:
Ms. Margit Glenn, Co-owner of Visionarch, LLC
The judges were impressed by Visionarch’s finished products, the collaborative manner with owners and the innovations and elegance they add to the homeowner’s creative concepts. They were even more impressed by Margit’s authentic, clearly enunciated pledge to exceed client expectations and to hear about the company’s new strategies for growth.
In 2008, Margit joined her husband Tom who started the company. Together they have been inspired by a desire to build a bridge between designers and builders. They have also had a longing to forge their own path while fearlessly pursuing projects that would require unique problem solving skills. And, it’s working.
Margit served as President of Key Peninsula Toastmasters in 2012. She is a very involved AWOB member, volunteering for committees and joining the board in 2014 as Secretary. She promotes the mission of AWOB by living it, passionately curious and eager to learn from all resources within AWOB.
Three regional public figures served as judges for the Crystal Star Awards.
The judges include Jeff Rounce, publisher of the South Sound Business Examiner; Julie Anderson, Pierce County Auditor; and Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent. The community judges are the ones who picked the ultimate recipients.
